Tuttle Modified Eric Johnson Strat

JUMBO Re-fretted EJ!

I've seen this config listed before. This seller has Michael Tuttle refret EJ Strats with 6100 frets, and strip the neck finish to replace with hand rubbed oil finish. He also jumps the middle pickup to the neck tone control. Standard EJ wiring omits the middle pu from any tone controls. This is a matter of taste, and easy to undo. The exciting thing is the jumbo frets and neck finish change. Tuttle is an excellent luthier who used to work for Grosh; with a reputation for fine fretwork.

Journey 2011 Tour

 I caught the Oct. 19th Journey show in Portland. Above is a pic from that show, although the video featured is from the Oct. 15th Mtn View, Shoreline Amphitheater Show- great quality! Neal only uses a Strat-type config in "Lights" in these 2011 tour shows. Some earlier Summer '11 clips show him with a Fender Strat, but Portland and Shoreline are clearly a PRS 305 platform set up for Schon. 305 is PRS' S-type S/S/S offering. And it sounds Stratty enough.

Neal plays various PRS models thru most of the show except for what looked like gold top LP on one tune. Mostly single cuts with Santana birds on the fretboards. Journey did a good show. They're headlining the current tour which includes Night Ranger and Foreigner. Pretty much a 70's-80's classic rock showcase thing. 

Neal is also using Blackstar amps. And according to his May 2011 interview by Joe Bosso at MusicRadar.com, Schon's Gibson signature model LP is no more, due to typical gibsoid shenanigans. Interestingly, he also mentions Fernandes bringing back the Schon guitar. So watch for this! Nothing at the Fernandes website yet.

4 Strats by Stevie Ray Vaughan Biographer!

Dallas, TX based eBay user claiming to be the author of SRV bio is auctioning a set of 4 SRV guitars. The seller should be Craig Hopkins. I'm waiting on verification from Craig who runs fan site: http://www.stevieray.com. 10/29- Craig responded and confirmed the auction is legit from the email contact address at the site.

Per the listing description:

"The ULTIMATE SRV Guitar Collection - I am the author of the biography Stevie Ray Vaughan: Day by Day, Night After Night (Craig Hopkins Confirmed) and have operated the SRV Fan Club since 1993. This is my personal collection of recreations of Stevie's most famous guitars. These will be sold ONLY as a set of four guitars. I will not respond to any requests to sell individual guitars.

1. The Fender Custom Shop "Number One." Luthier John Cruz confirmed for me that this is #12 of only 100 Custom Shop guitars. The current value of these is now $50,000-55,000 if you can find one. Custom Shop guitars like this are investment grade. Flight case, case candy and original shipping box.

2. The Fender Custom Shop "Lenny." Only 185 of these guitars were released for the U.S. market in 2007 by the famous Custom Shop. Stevie's "Lenny" sold for $623,000. Flight case, case candy and original shipping box. These Custom Shop guitars originally sold for $17,000.

3. Charley's Guitar Shop "Lipstick Special." Number 1 of only 23 made by Charley's Guitar Shop and Rene Martinez in January 2003. That's right - this is #1, the very first one. Other owners include Carlos Santana, John Mayer and other celebrities. Irridescent blue/white "flip-flop" paint, Charley's logo, hula girl on back, immitation snakeskin case. Certificate signed by Rene Martinez, Stevie's guitar tech. Best tone of any guitar I own.

4. Jim Hamilton "Hamiltone" a.ka. "Main." The most beautiful guitar I have ever owned. Sweet tone. This is number 01, made in 2004 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Stevie receiving his from Jim Hamilton in April 1984. I have photos of this guitar being made in Jim's studio - a very interesting photographic record of how these guitars were made. Signed on the back of the headstock by Jim Hamilton. This is NOT one of the asian knockoffs being sold by someone other than Jim Hamilton under the Hamiltone name. This is the real deal made by the same man who made Stevie's guitar..."

Swapping pickups around doesn't have to be like reinstalling Spock's brain. Actually it could never be that bad-- but not having to unsolder and resolder stuff would be nice. Fender Custom Shop's Jason Smith builds the skankiest, gankiest relics of all. His forte is multiple finish layers "color on color"-- a few of which we've featured. My favorite of his was a Shell Pink over Daphne Blue that brought back memories of someone's Chandler, Arizona bathroom in '78-- some party. Enough said on that.

The Music Zoo currently lists this as a new, one-off  Strat build. MZ stocks lot of heavy relics, as well as the NotRod/NoNeck stuff. Features include: Ash body, 9.5" radius qtrsawn "C" neck, 21 med jumbo frets, fat headstock, Abby wound 69 pickups, gold anodized pickguard & trem plate-- and of course all the relic trashiness you could ever want without damaging your liver...

Although I've known about Warrior Instruments for awhile, I actually had no idea they built Strat-types. But their "Experience" S style models are some VERY SERIOUS STRATOCRAFT! So where have I been?  

The Georgia based guitar maker is also creating some Hendrix tribute models in their S-type Experience series which include original licensed Hendrix art graphics. Although our featured model focuses on the inlays, others of the series display body graphics. I'm really diggin' this blue model though! Warrior's Experience guitars in general are made to order with a variety of wood, hdwr and electronics options available-- all hi-end stuff!  Experience models are set-neck, and have unique carved body contours.

Way beyond the usual, "We also offer an S-type to fill out our product line" thing.

These folks are crazy into woods, and do beautiful work throughout their guitar and bass line.

Bill even manages a fatty headstock. Relic treatment includes the standard Nash attention to correct wear & aging, as well as a mostly finish-free back of the neck area (not pictured). Godin Progression Boutique USB - Friday Strat #233

Canadian Made Guitars

 I love it when a guitar configuration appears more simple than it is. Usually it's the opposite. Godin's Progression Boutique USB appears to have only 2 knobs and 1 standard 5 pos switch. However, this guitar also switches to active pickup mode, and has a USB output for direct recording. And even though not everyone cares for these extras, ya gotta dig the clutter-free appearance of this model!

Traditional players can appreciate the use of top woods and hardware, and great fit and finish Godin is known for. And all for under $1K less shipping. Pretty good for a guitar made in N. America. Besides the black trans quilt finish above, these come in a few other nice natural finishes.
