Fender CS Roadshow LTD NOS - Friday Strat #232

Antique Cherry Burst

Fender Custom Shop's Roadshow LTD NOS series combines vintage with modern looks and features. Excuse the blurry pics, but I still wanted you to see the antique cherry burst color as well as neck tint.

This Strat is both sweet and sporty. An LSR nut and heel relief are a nice nod to the Jeff Beck Strats. Also included are locking tuners, 2 point bridge, 22 fret mid-60's "C" (fat C) with 6105's and a 9.5" radius. Pickups are Abby wound 69's at neck & middle with an overwound Texas Special bridge. And if that weren't enough they threw in an S-1 switch-- which is probably gilding the lilly, but at least it doesn't have an EC preamp, EMG's or a Floyd. I'd say it's sportin' enough for most trad Strat players who still likes them a little trim on the side to feel young again. Sure!

Music Gallery Inc Chicago based dealer since '74 and a spotless eBay Store history, have a nice FCS inventory including some Masterbuilt stuff as well as those new PRO NOS Strats with the fat headstocks and crazy colors.

Joe Bonamassa & Beth Hart -- Look Out!!!

Little Joe has Grown Up!

Get Back Loretta!

As good a Joe Bonamassa is, I've still had trouble getting past his pudgy kid, guitar virtuouso, nerd thing. Even with Black Country Communion. We know that little Joe grew up, and is a lexicon of classic rock and blues licks-- and a phenom. He's also a Strat defector-- and as such shouldn't be welcome here.

But damn!

This thing with Beth Hart is a brilliant move because even for me, it's like Joe has finally lost his virginity. It's awesome to riff with a scorchin' hot singer. Jeff Beck has been workin' with some crazy chick singers too. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi sound great together as well. Oh yeah, Daniel Lanois with Trixie Whitley... Grace Potter... I'm tellin' ya these white girls are doing their homework alright! And Beth Hart is gonna be dangerous to some of Bonamassa's uncle boomer fans out there who'd better bring the blood pressure meds to these shows-- and leave wifey home.

Did ya ever think Steve Marriott and Joe Cocker could look like this? Listen.

Now all Joe needs is a gold sparkle Strat!

Zerberus Guitars - German Craft Crazy!

Euro Design Meets Hybrid American Iconic

 Click photos for close-ups!

?? Nope. Not another stupid pre-amp back there...

The Zerberus "Makore' Triton" model has been haunting me since I stumbled across it a few days ago. Not our usual thing here-- but this guitar represents modern exotic refinement of classic solidbody platforms better than anything I've seen in awhile. And does so without gaudy, overdone ornamentation with inlay or shape. Kind of a Tele meets SG to spawn some sorta Beatrix Kiddo instrument for elite assassins.

There's a whole lot going on here with woods, components and function-- ergonomics taking a backseat to nothing. So it's a player's guitar, although woe & sorrow be it unto he who casteth the first scratch and ding.

In the looks department, you're gazing at a flame Makore' aka African Cherry top on a German Walnut body. The neck is a combination of mahogany and beechwood with a sexy lacewood fretboard. Some of these woods have been attic dried for 25-60 years. This guy seems hooked up to some old world furniture & cabinet makers with serious lumber stash. Standard electronics and hardware are top notch Wilkinson, Gotoh, etc.

Functionally, things really get interesting. The 9V batt compartment you see in the back powers a single LED for the neck loaded fiber optic illuminated fretboard and side position markers controlled by a 3 pos switch off/dim/bright also in the back. One battery is gonna last forever with one LED. But if this is too flashy for some, maybe you'll appreciate the incorporation of two fret types, with skinnier frets used higher up the 24 fret neck for improved shred ergonomics. Next, the 3 position pickup switch is supplemented with a 5 position rotary just above to squeeze the most from two P90's. But without being all busy looking!

Although Zerebrus has a nifty website, most of the specs are only found in the Zerberus eBay Store listings. Some content is German and some is in English. All neck/radius/fret specs are metric. I'm just too lazy to convert for you here.

Basically, a badass guitar that goes way beyond looks. It's Beatrix Kiddo.

T-Rex Tap Tone Delay and Yellow Drive Overdrive

T-Rex Exclusive Pedals for Guitar Center

The Yellow Drive dual stage overdrive and Tap Tone Delay are part of a new T-Rex series available only at Guitar Center. (Tap Tone coming very soon!)

Both pedals are budget priced nicely in the $150 range, with good features and capacity for the money, along with the same quality, construction and tones you get with more expensive T-Rex pedals. The Tap Tone is smooth with tons of  delay capacity; sounding a lot like its bigger siblings, the Reptile and Replica delays, just without the modulation and line level controls.

Yellow Drive is really impressive with its dual stage vintage overdrive tones that aren't fuzzy or muddy at all. I was able to get plenty of chord definition in Gain A with good edge and sustain. Gain B is fat and creamy with big Texas ZZ and EJ saturation. With either a Strat or a Humbucker config like the KOZM Guitars BB-3 in the video; a chambered body and DiMarzio DP-190/191 Air Classic pickups, the Yellow Drive provides wide tonal range, articulation and more than enough sweet nasty power.

Dunno how the name "Yellow" Drive came about, but it's the sweet hot mustard your sausage deserves!

Note: Anyone attending the AMP SHOW in LA, Oct 1 & 2, 2011 can check out the full line of KOZM Guitars, including the exact guitar featured in demo video above.

New Fender Custom Shop 62 Jazzmaster COPPER NOS

J-types are Hot!

Wow! A copper finish Jazzmaster with tortoise pickguard and rosewood is a beautiful thing indeed! This one is brand new too-- the COA date is 8/15/11. This copper finish we're also seeing with the current FCS Pine body Strats is very similar to a limited run of '55 Corvettes. Click here for more background.

Features include 7.25" radius, 21 vintage style frets and the usual Jazzmaster stuff. I'm not crazy about this trem, but at least it's lockable, and that's pretty cool. We're seeing the J-type body profile more and more these days with the boutique builders. A lot of those guys who've been making S & T's are adding J's. This one looks great!

Seller: Warpdrive Music aka Cream City Music. They gotta lotta nice gear!

Doyle Bramhall II Jams With Robert Randolph

2004 Crossroads Fest, Dallas

A lot going on here. Ya got a lefty upside-down guitarist trading licks with a blues pedal steel player. And some great camera shots make it interesting to watch. Then there's Billy Preston on the keys!

The real jam starts at 03:30 when Robert Randolph steps up, then at 04:30 Doyle and Randolph go into this unison stuff. This is all spontaneous jamming too.

Oh yeah, the drummer has a monster snare sound-- and that's a Chicken Ranch t-shirt! Drummers...

Fender Tweed Briefcase?

Classic Fender Case... Short Scale
vintage tweed guitar style briefcase
tweed briefcase

A Fender Tweed Briefcase might also be good for a guitar missing a neck. That is, if you don't have any briefs to put in it... or boxers either.  People will think you're a rock star, especially if you've stowed the guitar neck in your pants.

Or how 'bout filling the case with marbles and taking it through TSA just for fun-- "I'd rather not open it." Tell 'em they can keep the marbles. But pretend to be very sad about losing your marbles until they pass you through. Then laugh your ass off when you're out of their sight. They're seldom amused-- that's what TSA stands for y'know.

Not recommended for transporting Jello or items from Panda Express, unless you first Scotchgard very very heavily! Like maybe 3 cans.

Got all that?

Largest Stratocaster in the World! Friday Strat #231

Largest PLAYABLE Strat!!!

Wow! Elvis in da house too!

Move over Rover
Play Cliffs of Dover!

Size matters-- as long as ya got the hands for it! And I ain't messin' with no mofo with them kinda hands. I feel extra sorry for his woman too.

Built by Michael McBride in Charlotte, NC, these guitars are licensed by Fender, also making them the world's largest playable Fender guitars. The Strat you see above was built in 1998 and has toured the world for various events, fund raisers, etc. It's been featured on television shows including Ripley's Believe it or Not. I don't know where he got the strings, but they probably will never need changing.

McBride is still building these things to order, and mentions a Les Paul project, which will be the world's largest federal raid target I guess... These guitars are 4X scale-13' tall. I guess you tune it with a big wrench, and adjust the truss rod with a crowbar.

giantguitars- (McBride's eBay username) is currently listing Stratzilla for a paltry sum. Paul Allen should buy it for the EMP Museum!

Shocking New Guitar Set-up Guide!

How-to maintain your guitar like a pro

Yeah, there's already plenty of guitar guides out there-- and what could be so shocking about another one any-friggin'-way?

Billy Penn of 300guitars.com guitar blog has been sharing really good tech advice and gear reviews online for a few years. Anyone already familiar with Billy's site and his videos knows he has a strong passion about his work and helping the guitar geek community at large. Penn has been fixing and restoring guitars and amps for over 20 years. He's also a great guitar player, which is a valuable perspective not every guitar tech operates with! Ok, most of them noodle a bit, but Billy plays really well and gigs with his band regularly. He has also interviewed and shaken hands with Juha Roukangas, which means Billy now has The Force.

So finally he decides to put together this set-up and maintenance book that I've been privileged to review. And what I really want you to know is that Billy obviously put a lot of care and attention into it. It's clear and easy to understand, with good photos, supplementary video links and even a glossary of terms! Also, this is a download, eBook PDF, and Billy plans to email us revisions and updated versions in the future. So it's kind of a lifetime subscription thing.

Before the book was released, Billy asked other techs and players to review it and offer feedback for improving the content. I was even able to point out a misplaced comma which he promptly took care of.

What's SHOCKING to me is that he's almost giving this book away! For less than the cost of a 6 pack of beer or a pack of ciggys! A cheap bottle of wine. A fast food drive-thru. A Venti Latte' at Starbucks. Any of these things will cost more than Billy Penn's Guitar Set Up Guide! But Billy gets even more silly by offering a FREE preview download if you're still not sure the book is any good-- WTF!

I think he should have his head examined! So CLICK HERE for details, and just get that damn book! Skip the Double Whopper Combo today and do yourself a favor! Don't be a cheap, fat bastard!

I'm actually annoyed this cool book is so cheap-- Billy needs to work on his self esteem! Hopefully lots of you will buy this book, and help him feel better about himself. And if he's smart, he'll raise the price!

Buy it!

That's all I have to say.

Meet Billy Penn:

New & Loaded With Goodies!

One piece "roasted maple" neck

Yes, the fretboard is roasted maple too!

Between the "Root Beer Drip" finish and Suhr's spiffy roasted maple neck, this Classic configuration looks good enough to eat! Just looking at it has me jonesin' for some IHOP.

But unlike an IHOP item this Suhr S-type is packed full quality ingredients that are nutritious as well as delicious-- important for building strong, healthy tones.

Nutrional Info:  Basswood body with maple cap, JST Michael Landau pickups, SSC noise cancelling system, stainless steel JUMBO frets, 11-14" compound radius, soft "V", Gotoh 510 bridge and Sperzel locking tuners. Not your old man's Strat.

Elite Music Sales of Montgomery, Alabama is listing this as NEW with all paperwork and G&G case. They also currently list some serious boutique guitars by Grosh, LSL, Melancon, Scott Walker, Fano & Knaggs. Nothing from the IHOP menu here.

Queen's Official Tribute Band Sets a Precendent

Check out the Queen tribute band story at MusicRadar. I have a few thoughts.

Guitar Inlay Sticker & Decal Art

Unique Fretboard Accents

Space Invaders and a turquoise EKG? Hell yeah!

DNA

At first glance I thought the idea of faux inlay was pretty cheezy. But these guys have a crazy variety of hi-def fretboard decor as well as other types of accents for headstocks, body art, soundhole rosettes, etc. They have turquoise and mother of pearl-like material, SRV Lenny ornamentation, JEM pyramids, Jason Becker colored numerals, barbed wire, planets, Kokopelli and other indigenous/artsy stickers.

The material is made out of PET; a thermoplastic polymer resin which isn't at least supposed to look too cheezy. Just out of principal though, you should avoid doing a serious mother of pearl McNaught style tree of life type inlay job-- especially on a Fender Squier or something. This just invites the cheeze police to raid your home unannounced and take your stickers, your X-BOX, Sketchers shoes, Sunny Delight and salvia stash with no formal charges or day in court. And you'd deserve it too! Best to stick with kooky, contempo, hipster themes with subtle mystical hints. Just keep it stoopid if you get carried away as if you meant stoopid-- otherwise it could be cheeze po po at the door in full SWAT attire...

Jockomo Inlay Stickers - eBay Store, Osaka Japan- shipping worldwide. 99.9% postive/10K feedback. This stuff is light, ok!

Creative Cuts - Based in Burbank, CA - Mainly fretboard stuff, but lots of it!

Josh Gooch - Young Guitar Rocker

Skateboard to Guitar

20 year old Josh Gooch has been rockin' for awhile, but somehow managed to stay out of my radar. Maybe I'm slackin' too. Anyway, I discovered him in a video just posted by our Strat-o-Sister Hayley McLean from the Fender Showroom Grand Opening jam last weekend.

Josh mentions picking up the guitar when his skate board was stolen. Sounds like things have worked out ok. Probably values his appendages more these days too. Gooch was born in Seattle, and moved to San Diego when he was 7. He was a finalist in the '09 Guitar Center King of the Blues competition, and has already toured around Japan, and done some recording.

The above clip is a demo for the folks at Rivera Amps. Doesn't seem to be a Strat guy, but I'm lettin' him slide for now based on the licks at 04:24. It's also noteworthy when a kid nowadays has a Humble Pie - Smokin' t-shirt!

Jeff's Tricky Film Years

Jeff Beck Group - "Definitely Maybe"

I keep watching that blue screen for the 5 day forecast. Definitely Maybe Rain...

Here we join our hero sometime around 1972, as he wields a magical chocolate Strat, duplicating himself oompa loompa style for those double lead parts. Actually it could be an unused scene from the original Willy Wonka movie. Yeah, Gene Wilder had a hissy fit that Jeff was stealing his thunder, so it didn't make the final cut.

OR...

We're watching a lost Bewitched episode, where Jeff and his kooky lookalike warlock cousin Jack, join Samantha, Sabrina and the gang for some mischievous pranks and fun, popping in and out of here and there-- over, under, sideways, down, etc. Hilarity ensues as they drive Samantha's hubby Darren crazy as usual-- causing Darren's boss Larry Tate puzzlement and ever growing concern!

But that ain't the truth either. The truth is...

We are the weak. And Jeff is the tyranny of evil guitarists. But he's tryin', he's tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

1991 Ronaldo Custom Thinline Strat-type

1 of 2 Made

The other one was routed for HSH pickup config.

Whoa! A cherry burst semi-hollow Strat with swamp ash body, rear loaded electronics and a neck with enough birdseye to choke a horse!

Twenty years ago, this guitar was built side by side with a sibling model that was a custom build for Julio Fernandez of Spyro Gyra. This one has been stashed away most of its life. The pickups are hand wound, and there is very little fret wear. Seller reports finish wear behind the headstock from a guitar hanger-- attributing this to the nitro finish. Guitar comes with a Gator case.

The builder is Ronaldo Orlandoni who is currently the luthier at Pastore Music of Union City, NJ. Ronaldo has done work for a bunch of well known artists.

Eric Johnson's "Chuck Norris" Thread at TGP

Why Yes, EJ is the Chuck Norris of Guitarists!

Nope! This was actually done with a '57 Strat.

Hey, there's a new TGP comment thread of Chuck Norris/Most Interesting Man in the World style jokes about Eric Johnson. This undoubtedly stems from the tonemeister's 20 year old comment about being able to hear the differences between Duracell and Energizer batteries in his pedals.

"He can tell the type and grade of coal being burned at the power plant with his amp on standby!!!"

Some of the jokes are pretty dumb, but it's a start. So get over there and help out! EJ deserves only the best!

Here's another sample:

"He took one sniff of a 54 Strat, and declared it had been painted during the morning shift, approximately just before tea break, and the painter knocked off a minute early to visit the men's room."

Ya gotta give 'em credit for making up fresh guitar themed jokes instead of simply replacing existing Norris jokes with EJ.
