New Earvana Nut for Floyd Rose!

Earvana now makes a compensated nut which will directly replace a standard Floyd locking nut.

Some of you have been hoping and waiting for this to come around, as you cringe at the thought of some Feiten licensed skateboard repair clown going medieval on your favorite dive bomber.

Well, cringe no more!

For a fraction of the cost and no surgery required, an Earvana compensated nut will get you well intonated. I have these on my Strat & Tele, and totally recommend Earvana nuts. So, check 'em out!!!

Scott Henderson Plays Guitar Too Well...

This is how it's done.

An early 2008 gig at the Free Blues Club in Poland where Scott just tears it up!

Check out at 2:00 where he's picking behind the bridge pickup. Also notice the whammy pull ups starting at 8:50, including the real high one at 9:07! No Floyd & no locking nut folks. Ten minutes of Strat torture and still in tune!

Another Scott Henderson tone secret is a maximum 4 foot cable length from instrument to pedal board. That's it! Notice how close he stays to the Marshall in this clip. So, to reiterate-- no locking trem system and no stage gymnastics. Just kickass guitar playing!!!

Oh yeah, and the man can step out of the box! CLICK HERE for a quick vid lesson by Scott about fifths.

What more can I say... Enjoy!

Urban Legends of Guitar Tone

Has anyone else bought into the "Canned Creamed Corn in the Combo Cabinet" method of improving tone?

As part of my Spring cleanup here at the Stratoblogster compound (late Spring cleanup), I've decided to pull the cans from my cabs. I just can't tell the difference!

Either TGP or TDPRI had some discussion thread about this. Anyway, when it didn't help the first time, I went back and was told it has to be Del Monte brand creamed corn otherwise it won't work. But after switching to Del Monte, I still can't tell a difference, so I'm done with the creamed corn! It's BS!

It wasn't any different than the pickled pig's feet on the tuners thing or wrapping the pickups in bacon.

So don't do any of those things!

Apparel Tips for Aspiring SRV Clones

Summertime is Blues Fest time! And with more & more clones in full swing you may be having difficulties standin' out from the herd. So let's take a moment to ensure the wardrobe is working. Shall we?

First of all, any good SRV clone worth his Superglue, knows that Clint's Spaghetti Western look was a source of fashion inspiration for Stevie Ray.

So get yourself a poncho/serape thing-a-ma-deal and a hang 'em high hat. The poncho is also gonna help prevent non-authorized buckle dings to the back of your official Custom Shop Lenny replica. Hold on a minute! If you own a Lenny, you're not playin' Blues fests, you're performing orthodontic procedures 4 days a week. Sorry if I offended anyone there!

Besides a sound wardrobe, one also needs a good story for between tunes. Evidently, a couple thousand of you knew SRV personally, got to hang out and even swap a guitar or two with the legend. So you really gotta get that story across to the crowd with conviction and drinkability.

Finally, in any venues where smoking is still permitted, let's work on getting a 2 inch continuous ash as the smoke clouds up under your brim during those heart wrenching Lenny and/or Riviera Paradise spots.

Yes, the clones are in full force along with comfort food, hot rod & bike shows, beer fests and everything else which makes Americans yearn for the usetah wuz gool ol' daze before 9/11, unleaded gas and incurable STD's. Hey, I'm with ya on this too.

So slap on a set of 13's, work on your Pride & Joy and give the boomers what they paid for-- but don't get too creative beyond that now, ya hear!

Why Effects Pedal Lines are Like Mexican Restaurants

Ever wonder if there are actually any new guitar effects since Hendrix? There must be some. But besides digital technology, what are the post-Hendrix effects?

(photo: Lucibox)

Here's one of those analogies that wakes me up at 4 AM. I'm partly inspired here by a recent conversation with a guitar gear industry insider who says the boutique pedal sector appears to be the healthiest and least affected by recession.

First of all, this is not a slight on Mexican restaurants or Hispanic folks-- in fact, I patronize these establishments all too frequently. Salem, Oregon, population approx 380K, is a nearby Pacific NW city with a vibrant Hispanic population-- and consequently, many Mexican restaurants. There are Taco Bells in Salem too, but you'd have to be severely lobotomized to eat at one, as there are Mexican cafes on nearly every corner. Well, the Oregon State Mental Hospital is in Salem too, thus Taco Bell can exist for outpatient referral.

I'll get to the crux here soon...

Trying to get BBQ in Salem is another story! At one point there actually were about 4 BBQ places, but now they're down to like one, and it sucks. But that's another story. We're hoping to tie guitar pedals in somewhere.

Now I know that Mexican cuisine can be a lot more exotic than the standard fare in most US "gringo-ized" joints, just as Chinese goes a wee bit beyond Chow Mein, Sweet-n-Sour Pork & fortune cookies.

The standard formula starts with a flour tortilla and a corn tortilla. Configurations include flat, folded, rolled, deep fried, etc., combined with fillings or toppings of beef, chicken, pork or cheese, topped with more cheese, shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes-- AND accompanied with rice and beans. Menu entrees consist of these various configs. which have their own name and usually an assigned number for the bilingually challenged. A closer look at the #36 you just ordered usually reveals it to be a simple reconfiguration of a #4, 7, 16, 22, 23, 28, 39, 41, etc...

Am I saying here that all pedal producers and all Mexican restaurants are alike? Not exactly.

Besides being numerous, colorful and promising the hope of a zesty experience, there are always better ones and worse ones, just like anything else. But unlike many many other enterprises around which seem to be disappearing, more new pedal makers and Mexican restaurants just keep showing up! And in spite of mega outfits i.e. BOSS, Ibanez, DOD & EHX, who oughta have everything you'll ever need-- small boutique builders just keep popping out of the woodwork. Doesn't say much for the mega outfits, and also explains how folks like Keeley & Analog Mike make a good living re-tweaking Tube Screamers & Blues Drivers into mythical states for mythic fees. Welcome to the pedal fiesta! Everyone's here!

Overdrives, Distortions, Delays, Phasers, Flangers, Vibes... Analog or Digital? Corn or Flour?

Many of these basic circuits are unpatented and have been around for decades. Another crazy finish and your choice of domed, top hat or chickenhead knob. So many choices out there! Perhaps for the avid compulsive tone chaser, acquiring pedals is like collecting Matchbox or Hot Wheels cars-- or God forbid I should mention Beanie Babies.

And what about "TRUE BYPASS"... Why doesn't somebody just name their effects line TRUE BYPASS, and get it over with. Great brand name for a pedal builder! You read it here first.

But we still haven't resolved why pedal businesses and Mexican restaurants are so prolific...

Well, it takes time to craft and cook sounds when plugged straight into your amp. So maybe effects pedals are like chips and salsa- though not free- they're something to snack on right away, until the main meal shows up. Ya just have to be careful not to fill up on chips & salsa, then have to take #36 home where it turns into a science project in the back of the Frigidaire.

Typically, only Mexican restaurants put out the snacks right away. People can't get enough of that. I guess we can't get enough pedals either! Just remember that when & if YOUR tone arrives, not to let it end up behind the empty mayo jar.

And that explains everything.

Time for lunch! Arroz con pollo!

Ever Date Your Stratocaster? Hmmm...

Vintage Guitar Appraisals, Dating and Authentication.

(photo:www.imdb.com)
A visitor from Bethesda, Maryland recently arrived at Stratoblogster by Googling the search phrase:

"Dating my Eric Johnson Stratocaster"

For a few seconds, this conjured up a surrealistic eHarmony.com commercial for me.

The EJ Strat was first introduced January 20, 2005-- meaning somebody in Bethesda is really robbin' the cradle...

But that is as far as we're gonna go.

WIRED Just Catching on to Relic Guitars??

That's right! Cutting edge tech culture & trendzine Wired just did an online feature about Relic guitars. I guess we can call it a "retrospective" on more levels than one.

Shopworn 'Relics' Put Vintage Soul in Guitarists' Hands

The article is actually fine-- providing a good review of the Relic trend, and even touching bases with Fender Relic innovators John Page & Vince Cunetto. I was just a bit surprised to see this show up now at Wired. And it ain't just me-- take a browse thru the article's comment thread for giggles.

Anyway, to supplement our apparently still growing relic culture, below are just a few crafty additions to the theme:

Ed Note: The following is from a Sept. 07 post titled: "Hold the Relic, Please!!!"

Although "relic-aged-distressed" works for guitars, jeans and pub decor, it doesn't necessarily fly for everything. We're just a picky society, I guess...

Taylor Marvin's Red Rocks Bench Guitar

Vintage Redwood Tele Thinline style custom by Colorado builder Brent Worthington.

Here's a very cool update on Taylor Marvin, a previous Young Guitar Wonders feature.

The Colorado lad has a new axe built from the old redwood of front row bench #13, from the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater. The guitar even includes the #13 tag. This piece of wood has "heard" and absorbed decades of fine concert performances, including The Beatles. It may even have a measurable quantity of THC content.

Sorry for the delay on this week's Friday Strat. I just got back from camping and was getting ready to post another "Best of" from the archive, when Mike Delaney sent me the scoop on his latest New Mexico themed Silver City S-type custom.

From Mike's description:

"...swamp ash for the body with a silver pickguard and trem cover, a birdseye maple/rosewood neck with silver and turquoise inlay dots, Hipshot tremolo and tuners, Amalfitano pickups, blood red aniline dye and nitrocellulose lacquer finish."

Be sure to click each photo twice for the extra close-ups! The ash grain is killer, and the silver/turquoise inlay dots rock!!!

Choosing the Right Strat

Fracturecaster(click for photo credit)

Many good guitars are accidents-- particularly solid bodies. The opinions of Allan Holdsworth and Eric Johnson about TONE, in the '80's, gave the solidbody guitar community more insight and hope. A great design configuration expresses a potential. But what brings it all together into a great sounding instrument is either great care or chance. We count on the more expensive pieces to include the care. The cheaper cuts of meat have to be picked through to find the gems. Sometimes a minor, inexpensive hardware upgrade creates a huge difference. To the degree an instrument is integrated-- it is not dis-integrated, and visa-versa.

The needs of a musician vs the needs of an investor shouldn't be confused.

As the Stratocaster is an icon, it has become another form of baseball card or beenie baby. The icon status originates from being an instrument preferred by notable musicians and is further exploited for various purposes. The manufacturers want to stay in the loop, for viability, thus all the reissues, relics, tribute models and other added significances.

When these "significances" take priority over the care factor, and command a hefty price tag to boot-- you're looking at investment instruments.

If you have the money and are into guitars too-- trading and collecting can be fun and profitable. However, if you're primarily into playing music, need a good instrument but don't have much money, you shouldn't be discouraged or distracted by marketing. Good and affordable guitars are out there, they just don't have the "designer labeling", be that a brand/model name, a signature or even a cigarette burn.

Add your own significance to your guitar by creating good music, and perhaps others will attach added value to it because of you. But mainly, play for the love of it and differentiate between creativity and speculation.

If I want an investment guitar and have the $24K, maybe getting a Clapton "Blackie" makes sense. On the other hand, if creating music is my main focus, that same $24K can buy dozens of Mexican Strats or a few John Suhr's instead. Either way, I'm bound to end up very happy as a player. I discovered that when a guitar sounds good and is well intonated, I start to focus on music, and other “issues” with the instrument become less critical. Even a neck that’s fatter than I prefer, suddenly becomes thinner when the sound is happening. Perhaps the “perfect guitar” is boring. Jeff Beck switched back to Strats from Jacksons because Strats are physically more difficult to play-- but bring out more “Jeff”. In the process of working harder, Jeff’s phrasing and riffs are more fully developed and carefully chosen. Scott Henderson switched from Ibanez to Strat type guitars (Suhr's) for the exact same reason. And why does Eric Johnson insist on playing Strats, when it might seem to make more sense for him to play Parkers?

It's a great time to play guitar! Just stay focused on your goals and purposes as a player, and remember that you play the guitar, it's not the other way around.

Stratoblogster in the Trenches & Tents

Apologies for the recent lack of posting!

I've been working on some technical issues with the blog which have really crashed Stratoblogster in the search engines. Ultimately I'm looking at migrating from the Blogger platform to WordPress. Meanwhile, I'm tediously fixing linking issues throughout hundreds of posts.

Fun! NOT...

Also this week we've been preparing for a vacation which starts tomorrow thru next Thursday-- so there probably won't be much posting, particularly since I'll be camping part of the week in the wilds of Northern Idaho. Pray I don't get chomped by a bear or mountain lion!

On at least one interesting note, this Friday I am meeting with a key gear industry person who's name I can't divulge, to talk about stuff I also can't divulge. Although that's pretty "non-story, so what!" to my faithful readers, I do hope to gain some insights that can somehow be shared in future posts.

FINALLY, this week's Friday Strat feature will show up on schedule-- and will probably be a special Best of... from our extensive archive of fine past Stratoliciousness!

Cruz Masterbuild Violet Candy Stratocaster

Item ID# 320558792439

I think we featured this same guitar back in March. The latest seller is different, but the headstock grain looks the same.

Anyway the current seller gives a bit more info. about the series. According to the listing, a custom candy color series was in this run of Masterbuild Strats. It's not indicated whether John Cruz did the entire candy run, but there were apparently 50 Strats which included 10 guitars each in the following 5 colors over a 23 karat gold leaf base:

Violet Candy, Persimmon Candy, Cherry Candy, Purple Candy and Chartreuse Candy.

Pretty good stripper names too, I reckon.

Hey! This gives me an idea for a line of brass pole guitar hangers. It could happen!

Derivative Music or Blatant Rip Off?

This post started off as my comment at the Fretterverse blog post titled: Derivative or Ripoff? So, be sure to also check out Josh's post for his thoughts.

My response:

Great topic to take on! It's pretty slippery though because most music is very derivative. The Satriani-Coldplay case brought up a lot of this sort of discussion. Artist integrity and karma are the most important elements before things have to get messy with attorneys, etc. At which point it's simply gone below the zone of what art is about. To a certain degree, style requires certain content and feel. With simpler Rock & Blues stuff, the feel is nearly everything, as the content is often a very common platform.

But it boils down to the artist. If he's aware of copping something blatantly and plagiarizing, then he should also be wary that he's a fair target. If you like something you've heard, and want to incorporate it into your own music the prudent thing to do is break it down, change it up and make it your own as best you can. Then, if you feel clean about it, go with it. You may still be a target, but it depends on who's complaining. We can read Youtube comment threads all day long where trolls do nothing but criticize even the best musicians for "ripping off" something. Nobody escapes that stuff.

It's always best for the artist to stay aware of his influences and respect them, while relying upon those influences for their essence. Intent can often be felt by others. I enjoy some SRV clones, and am disgusted by others. Asking myself "why?", I had to examine how pure the emotion felt to me. That's all I can ever do, but I definitely "feel" differences, hence I enjoy some SRV clones and don't others.

But as I said, this is a very slippery subject. NOTHING is totally original. Every automobile contains many of the same nuts, bolts, components, etc. What makes one model different from the next is in the styling cues and innovations. Still, we see an awful lot of similarity on the road, and many models and brands incorporate common raw hardware pieces. I wonder if Angus Young ever feels like he's ripping himself off or reinventing his essence.

For composers, there is an enormous wealth of music, material, genres and influences out there to synthesize with. It really helps to have a broad listening diet. A guitar player who listens to NOTHING BUT Steve Vai can't help but create overly Vai-ish material of his own. Although he may have integrity, and respect for Vai, he's perhaps too close to avoid inadvertently copping too much from his influence. And even with the noblest of intentions, he may find himself in trouble. Any guitar player who only listens to *Angus Young may want to mix it up a bit more.

The Beatles were the first to admit ripping off everyone, though ironically most people consider The Beatles to be highly original. The Beatles basically listened to a very broad spectrum of music from which they synthesized and made their own with good imagination and variety. Eric Johnson cites Joni Mitchell as one of his major influences. Think about that one.

We're all responsible for "growing and harvesting" new crops of art. Too much inbreeding anywhere will weaken and retard the genes. What WE bring to the table by being eclectic and imaginative keeps the art fresh & viable-- with due respect to our influences, and not getting into too much trouble with those who matter most.

* I really am a big Angus fan. Hopefully most of you get my point here.

BURNED: Living Through the 80s and 90s as a Rock and Roll Guitarist

Book by Bobby DeVito

"As Hunter S. Thompson said, 'The music business is a hallway filled with snakes and whores…and there’s a negative side too'."

Many online oriented gear heads are familiar with Bobby D's colorful effects pedal & gear demos at youtube.com/roccotanto. Bobby and Gearmanndude are perhaps the web's most likable, laid back and colorful characters when it comes to making clips that aren't cold, dry & sterile.

My ongoing rapport with Bobby D brought me an invitation to review his newly released book about the life of a working, touring guitar player in the 80's & 90's.
And although it may be no surprise that the story includes the stereotypical lifestyle excesses ultimately leading to rehab, the level of humor and lust for life Bobby injects throughout makes it impossible put down... Even in the roughest parts.

Unlike similar books by rock superstar legends, this one wasn't written by or for one of those. But DeVito's bio is about being so close to legendary that you can taste it-- sometimes tasting too much.

Having read Clapton's bio, Aerosmith's "Walk this Way", "Up & Down With The Rolling Stones" and "Miles", I can honestly say this book was the fastest paced of all the above. And Bobby's life experiences from a nomadic childhood to touring Italy with Texas Bluesman Sherman Robertson, to studying Aleister Crowley, to living & playing on the Santa Monica Pier, to a mental hospital along with some intense spiritual epiphanies are as interesting and compelling as the best of 'em. And the humor throughout reveals an artist willing to experience a broad spectrum of living despite the costs.

And the good part is that Bobby D is a survivor, still creating and hopefully will continue to be. At least he was this morning when he emailed me...

SCRIBD.COM, a social network for authors has a free preview of Bobby's book, with an unabridged download option for $5-- a whole lotta bang for your Rock literary buck!

The mahogany neck sports a Brazilian rosewood fretboard, and the HSH pickup config consists of 2 Aldrich's with a Fletcher-Landau at center.
