Here's a very interesting audio interview of Frank talking about improvising on guitar. The stuff toward the middle of the clip, about the open tonality of intervals, is something I've been having lots of fun with, and am really excited to hear FZ talk about. Really makes my day! I've really been getting into simple chord & interval voicings, and discovering how they can expand the sound. What really helped me was using only altered tunings for a couple years, and staying away from standard. Then when I came back to standard, I stayed out of the boxes-- literally. Altered tunings rewired me. And that's where it's happening. Where you can rediscover Billy Gibbons, Keith Richards, Hendrix, etc. And here's Frank talking about it!
I'm finding a lot more interesting Frank stuff on Youtube than a year ago, when it seemed like the FZ officials seemed to be aggressively policing what people uploaded there. It's different at the moment... Really loosened up. I even found a long series of Frank being interviewed by a Pennsylvania State Trooper-- in uniform. That's right, you read right. Maybe Frank got pulled over in PA, the officer happened to be a fan (and he is!) and Frank did the interview to get out of the ticket. It's a crazy context...
Anyway, if you're a Zappa fan, take a fresh browse around Youtube!
I even found a backwards version of Ya Hozna!!!
