Eleven Electrix Effects Pedals USA Dealer

Italian Guitar Pedals

CustomGuitarBoutique.com of NYC is bringing in Italy's Eleven Electrix effects line! I can almost understand the above demo video by Enrico Santacatterina, the Gearmanndude of the Mediterranean. At least the word Overdrive is an international term. We always have fun with Italian gear because of the sexy elements they incorporate. Whether it's Molinelli's G-Spot guitar model or Cicognani Amps control panel setting labeled "Sexy". Click here for more about them.

Now Italy is bringing us pedals that must be sexy too. Check out the slim profile of this pedal-- how it is low to the ground like a... Lamborghini? I'm tellin' ya! There's ALWAYS something about Italian products that indicates they're Italian.

Contact the Boutique for translation and details on Eleven Electrix pedals. Let 'em know Stratoblogster sent you-- and be sure to ask what makes these pedals so sexy!

Lattanzi Shoes
BTW, if you think the Relic phenomenon is exclusive to guitar gear and the US, just know the Italians own that concept too.

Italian shoemaker Silvano Lattanzi has a line of handmade loafers that are buried in an aging pit for 4 years. Pictured are the "Scarpe de Fossa" collection-- Italian for "entombed shoes".

And is $12,000 a pair sexy enough for ya?!

Mike Stern's Big Neighborhood w/Eric Johnson & Steve Vai

Big Neighborhood is the latest from fusion jazz chops master Mike Stern.

I just listened to the title cut at Reverb Nation, which features Stern and Vai trading solos in a cool Hendrixy "Who Knows" kinda groove. That's the tune you hear in the above promo clip.

Mike Stern is pretty diverse, as the title "Big Neighborhood" implies. But anyone who remembers the incendiary monster licks from his Upside Downside album knows he can burn big time, and will dig some of the stuff he does here with his extreme guitar guests. This is NOT a shred-fest though. This is big city music with the bonus of great guitars and variety. In some ways, Mike Stern is like Metheny in black leather. He does some of that ethereal and pretty stuff, but you never know when he's gonna rip your face off. Far less likely that Steve Vai would ever show up on a Pat Metheny album.

But it's always very cool for music when these unlikely collaborations occur!

Big Neighborhood has first class musicians across the board. A chance to step into a grown up world that still has chills and thrills!

Potential Viagra Side Effects for Guitar Players?

So I had a dream about taking Viagra, and it made my hands swell up-- though not quite as large as in the photo-- and I couldn't do a thing with 'em. After 4 hours and no changes, I decided to seek medical assistance. Four hours just seemed like long enough...

The doctor exclaims, "Oh! You must be a pianist!", to which I respond, "A what?!".
Doc replies, "Poker dealer?". I'm like, "What are you talking about?" Doc says, "Certain professions have lots of attention through their hands, and sometimes ED medication results get diverted there."

"Oh... Well, I do play guitar."

Doc raises his eyebrows and appears thoughful for a moment, then the nurse comments, "He must be good!"

Doc slowly nods... And I wake up.

Anyone else ever have a dream like this??

Steve Vai's Contempo Listening Diet... Burp!

Anybody read the Oct '09 PG Vai interview?

Very cool interview with perhaps the last of the actual "Guitar Gods" (sorry-- Hammett, Corgan, Frusciante, Mayer and even Govan missed the official Guitar God cut-off).

It's always good to hear the latest from this cat who could very well be the least dysfunctional and most positive guitar god we've had. Think about it. And let me be very up front when I say that I can't lick his piggies-- even the ones who cry Wee! Wee! Wee!.

BUT... Did anyone check out who SV has in his iPod these days? After reading the interview, I scampered across the browser tabs to check out Antony and the Johnsons and John Frusciante's Empyrean album. Now, I'm into eclectic and all, but Holy Schmegg! And I'm thinkin' that Vai must be dramatizing some kinda paranoid strateg-o-phrenia here fer sure, cuz, after a few painful minutes of the aforementioned, you gotta run for your life to hear some solid guitar playin'. Otherwise, you could die from catastrophic anemia, right out in your very own driveway even...

That previous paragraph is dedicated to Laurie Monk.

And what's up with interviewer Oscar Jordan asking SOOOOO many questions about Steve Vai's FANS? No, I don't mean loyal, fanatic listenership-- NO! I mean fans that blow air through Steve's hair. Why is that important to guitar rag readers?

But anyways, I'm always diggin' the Vai-ness, and was more than pleasantly surprised that Steve is a huge TOM WAITS fan! Now that's some eclectic I can be down with!

Oh yeah, same PG issue does a Tommy Emmanuel interview. Tommy is beautiful.

Slider's True Vintage 1956 Pickups

formvar wire NOS 1956
Bakelite Pickup Covers
Sliders Vintage True 1956 Pickups
www.abc.net.au/news/photos

This particular wire was procured through normal channels and some luck, however there are times when Slider must utilize special ceremonies in order to time travel for the wire. And as everyone knows, time travel can be pretty tricky stuff!

After returning from the Outback where he "prepares" for each new pickup winding project by meeting with the Elders, Rod McQueen has just produced this '56 set with genuine vintage NOS formvar wire from 1956.

Here's more from Rod "Slider" himself:

"...These are my premium offerings, which means these are some of the finest pickups available, ANYWHERE. Personally handwound with exceedingly rare, painstakingly selected and matched materials. The major component, being the coil wire, is REAL, 1/1956 Heavy coat Formvar, all associated parts are imported from the USA and the highest quality, true to the original Fender pickups.

This set consists of 3 hand made scatterwound Single Coil Pickups with Aged White, vintage correct re-pro "rounded" Bakelite style Pickup Covers. These classic pickup covers alone are very difficult to find and sell for considerable amounts by themselves! You also get a full set of aged 6/32 UNC adjustment screws with natural amber, vintage style rubber spacers.

North magnetic polarity, correct for factory pre c1958

Winding (clockwise), real vintage "NOS" 1/1956 dated, heavy build "Formvar" copper wire

AlNiCo 3 etched, staggered height, Hand beveled, individual pole pieces, Low B, high D & G. All individually magnetized by me, using rare earth Neo-dymium Boride polarising magnets to recreate 50 year old Alnico. Exacting, aged replication.

Vintage correct Black vulcanized "forbon" fiber flatwork bobbins with Nickel Silver wiring eyelets

Output wiring is 12" Black (ground) and 12" White (active), aged 22g celanese wrap and waxed braided, cotton outer insulation, vintage pushback wiring

This set is vintage "Straight Up" without a reverse wound/reverse polarity RW/RP middle pickup. All are matched to work perfectly with 3 or 5 way switching and no "out of phase" issues or dramas!

All are Lacquered, prior to winding to prevent long term corrosion of the wire against the AlNiCo poles (the most common problem I see for killing vintage pickups, check that last pic again!), then mixed Wax potted "post build" to reduce possible high volume microphonics and provide protection to the delicate windings.

These pickups come individually tested, labeled and signed with all specs relating to Materials, Polarity and Composition as well as a signed certificate of authenticity with pictures of the actual wooden spooled 1956 wire used to build them!

These are not an "off the shelf" pickup and are intended for the discerning player or restorer of fine instruments..."

Bernie Williams Moving Forward With a Strat!

Veteran Yankee outfielder Bernie Williams has other fish to fry after his MLB career besides commentating, car dealerships or weight loss commercials. Williams wields a Strat as easily as a bat. The aptly titled "Moving Forward" is actually Bernie's second album, having already shared stage & studio with the likes of Bela Fleck, David Sancious, Kenny Aronoff, David Benoit, Ruben Blades and Leland Sklar. And although I could be wrong, isn't that Dave Weckl on drums in our featured video?

So, smooth jazz fan or not, it's easy to dig Bernie Williams' new career path, plus the heavy hitting session cats he's now hangin' with! Hopefully he's not spitting tobacco juice around his pedalboard!

Didn't Craig Ferguson quit drinking?

Fruscianti's Fretless '57 Strat by Ned Evett

Guitar Player magazine called Ned Evett "The world's first fretless guitar rockstar." Now before you groan, "Ohhh no, fretless is too weird...", ya gotta listen to Ned!

Evett started off building his own glass fingerboard modified necks for Strats. In the above 2006 video, Ned demonstrates on a '57 Strat he was setting up for John Frusciante. Not to worry, that's not the original '57 neck.

For me, fretless has always been a little interesting but mostly too strange, probably because fretless players are often playing very avant garde micro-tonal Indian stuff that I can't ever seem to time my buzz to. Ned, however, is whippin' out some cool Sonny Landreth sounding licks and voicings. Then from a different corner of the spectrum, you can hear some Mattias IA Eklundh harmonic tones and attack.

Doncha wonder what those guys would think of this video? I'm wondering!

This is crazy, but maybe violinists and cellists were on the right track all along... Still, I like big frets, and I cannot lie!

Special thanks to reader Adam for sharing this! Adam had the chance to hang out with Evett at the Fretless Guitar Fest in NYC.

Gibson Hendrix S-Type? FOLLOW-UP

I dug when the Hendrix family recovered the rights to everything and started releasing materials. Alan Douglas was a scum. I also look forward to all the new material coming out. As for this Gibson-Strat thing, I just think that Janie doesn't understand the guitar culture demographic out there well enough. But Gibson does...

Lots of companies and boutique guitar builders mimic the Strat platform. But involving Gibson in this context obviously strikes a sensitive nerve out there. It's like the McQueen family consorting with GM to build Bullitt Mustangs in the Corvette plant. That sort of thing really pushes people's buttons.

A cool thing for Janie to have done would have been to establish a licensed by FMIC production project involved with training underprivileged youth to build these guitars. What a sweet PR scenario that could have been! Gibson just plain knows better. They have no excuse.

Duke Robillard - Lexicon of Tasty Blues Phrasing

What a treat to find this video! Here's Duke Robillard, on a Strat no less, playing one of my favorites of his called "Duke's Mood" from the Pleasure Kings album. Note this is from '88. Players like Robillard, Ronnie Earl & Little Charlie Baty are sometimes wrongly labeled as SRV spin offs, which couldn't be further from the truth. Those guys were already out there doing the T-Bone Walker shuffle thing when SRV hit the scene. And they're still doing it.

C'mon! Is that the greatest ending or what!?

Yasser "Yassz" Tejeda - Dominican Fusion Guitar

Thanks to reader Adam for turning me on to Yassz Tejeda! Really cool world beat jazz fusion stuff here folks. The above vid tune called "coco de agua" (Coconut Grove), is from 2007. Yasser has newer Youtube clips, including some '09 performances at Berklee, but I'm really into his '07 clips with this rhythm section. At www.youtube.com/user/Yassz look for his videos titled "Machacando, Mezclansa and 3 Palo to'" for this same session and musician line-up.

Listening to all the tunes reveals an eclectic mix of Afro-Dominican Jazz, Blues, Straight ahead Fusion and more. This bass player is a killer, and the drummer an absolute monster! According to our friend Adam, Yassz has been a student of Dave Fiuczynski of the legendary Screaming Headless Torsos.

Trucks and Bonamassa Jam, Hot August Blues Fest

I found this vid posted over at Guitar Lifestyle blog.

The vid was shot last month at Maryland's Hot August Blues Festival, where Derek Trucks and Joe Bonamassa headlined. These cats rule the new young Blues Aristocracy with major authority. And whoever made this video had them some V-I in their P, hangin' with the back stage and all.

No Strats spoken here but no matter, cuz these boys know their sound and have chops on the blue chip side of the mojo market index.

Bonamassa takes the first solo-- he's the one in the shorts. Then Derek Trucks, who's gotta be the most chill being on planet Earth, strolls into a churnin' urn of burnin' groovitude ultimately turning into a jam on the classic Band of Gypsys "Who Knows".

Who knew?!

Anybody who attended this gig really knew!

You gotta believe that's Portland, Oregon speak too. "No issues & Non smoking" are very important terms in this part of the country. They'll waterboard ya for smoking in public around these parts. Even though they're not into waterboarding either.

This Buddy Guy looks pretty clean, has "medium-jumbo" frets (probably 6105's), a soft V neck, strap locks and a soft case.

Maybe the hard case was ruined during a waterboarding incident...

"Sonic-Seafoam?", you ask. Exactly. I made it up, ok. Parts of the eBay listing say Sonic Blue, while others say Seafoam. Plus, the top color is over a burst. So basically you can call it what you want-- I call it messin' with the kid. Looks an awful lot like my neighbor's pitnic table-- anyone remember that? see Pitnic Table

We've featured Rittenhouse relic jobs before. They're based down in Florida, where I think they take Strats and keel haul 'em through the Keys and the barnacles. Just a guess... I could be totally wrong.

In all fairness though, Rittenhouse equips his projects very well. Our featured specimen comes with Lollar Blackface pups, Gotoh Vintage tuners, all vintage cloth wiring, CTS pots, Switchcraft jack, Orange Drop cap, CRL Switch and a hand formed all bone nut (gator bone?).

All this according to LickLibrary.com who quotes Janie Hendrix, the ultimate queen, gatekeeper and say-so over all Hendrix merch.

Coolest Retro Amp Demo Video - Harden Engineering

Harden Engineering has some cool retro gear, including whack lookin' Guitars, pedals and their "Switchblade TV" model amp.

For those tired of the same old hum-drum gear demo clips, Harden comes up with a refreshing twist here. My favorite scenes are, the laundromat and sittin' behind the Caddy with the crumpled rear quarter panel. Looks like maybe Chicago-- can anybody verify the video locale?

Not only does the video fit the theme, but so does the audio which by itself is a righteous sound clip for any old school tone amp out there. Kudos to Harden Engineering for this most classy of presentations!!!

Attitube G20 Amp With Variable Attenuator Pedal

From June 09's NY Amp Show, here's PG Mag's always effervescent Joe Coffee with Mr. Chess Lim, CEO of ECOSYS, Inc. which has the Attitube Amp and Shaman Guitar lines. In all his excitement over holding such a big mic or somethin', I guess Smokin' Joe forgets to formally introduce Mr. Lim-- instead, approaching him like he's a food court toothpick samples guy.

Anyway, all aside, it's a decent look at this cool little 20 Watt, handwired, EL84 powered amp. We also get a little taste of Lace Alumitone pickups, which look kinda like little hibachi grills to me. Another exciting item besides Attitube's Applesque white speaker cab is the variable attenuator pedal, which Mr. Lim refers to as the first of it's kind-- and he may be right, since the O'Brien one didn't work (anyone remember O'Brien?).

I think the progressive and cross-device cosmetic of the Attitube G20 package could have Generation Z appeal. Combine that with real tubes and old school hand wiring, and you got a great way to guarantee the taste for classic tone into the future.

Life Changing Guitar Solos...

This image is the #1 Google Images result right now for search term "guitar solo".

Clinton over at The Guitar Column blog is celebrating his 100th blog post with a list of 8 solos that changed his life. Dunno why he decided on "8", but since it's the symbol for infinity, let's just roll with it.

One of his favs is the Hendrix Watchtower solo-- and he asks if anyone knows how Jimi did the "slide" part. Did he actually use a slide or what? What say you? I say no slide at all. Go check his top 8, and add your two cents to the Hendrix thing.

Meanwhile, here's my top 8 life changing guitar solos this moment:

1 - Hendrix - Power to Love (intro. part from original Band of Gypsys album)

2 - Clapton - Crossroads - live w/Cream

3 - Trower - Too Rollin' Stoned - Bridge of Sighs studio version

4 - Jimmy Page - Whole Lotta Love - studio

5 - Jeff Beck - Love is Green - Wired album

6 - Michael Schenker - Mother Mary - UFO's "Force It" album

7 - Allan Holdsworth - In the Dead of Night - UK

8 - Scott Henderson - Tore Down House - title cut from TDH album

It's really hard to stop at 8! But the above aren't carved in stone and could be replaced by solos from Eric Johnson, EVH, SRV, Steve Morse, Satriani, Johnny Winter... and the list goes on.

What are your top 8? If it helps, keep thinking "LIFE CHANGING".

Heritage STAT For Sale, That's S-T-A-T !

Rare guitar
Heritage STAT GuitarClick images for close-up view!

'86 Heritage Stat
Guitar Adoptions currently lists this "near mint" '86 Heritage Stat in their pre-owned section. Yes, I'm saying Stat... S-T-A-T.

As to whether that's short for STATocaster or STATistic is open to your own metaphoric interpretations.

For those unfamiliar with Heritage, in a nutshell, this company was formed by the old pre-Henry J., Gibson hold-out crew in Kalamazoo-- the "Hell No, We Won't Go! (to Tennessee) folks. In a nutshell ok, and I'm the head nut here, so don't comment with the whole story. Anyone interested is advised to research it beyond this post-- please!

Heritage has been chuggin' along, although not without some ups and downs. Interestingly enough, their current home web page includes the full GPS Coordinates to their facility.

"GPS Co-ordinates for: Heritage Guitar Inc.
( NAD-27, Map setting for your GPS )
Decimal Degrees / Deg:Min:Sec
Latitude 42.301049 42:18:3.776N
Longitude -085.580807 85:34:50.905W"

So load this in your TomTom or Garmin for a recon road trip to Kalamazoo, and relay back to us your intel on secure channels ok!

Back to the STAT. Web research indicates the STAT was produced from '86 to 91 the end of the big hair era (better late than never). However, the "Model History" page at Heritage' site omits the STAT from their '85 to 93 model introduction lineup. Maybe this is because simply leaving out the "R" wasn't sufficient for certain parties to the West who need no introduction or the inclusion of GPS co-ordinates.

Gibby DNA includes a set mahogany neck, maple on bound mahogany body and a 17 degree tilt headstock-- just so's ya know where it's comin' from. Shifting gears, we have a 22 fret neck, 25.5" scale length and Fullertonesque body contours (I wish they all could be California Girls!). Our featured model includes a Kahler locking system and HSS pickup config. My theory about why all those pickup switches is that they were incorporated as a subterfuge to keep the S-T-A-T in the bag, so to speak. Whereas, a simple 5 pos lever switch might have revealed too much similarity... Just my theory.

Hey! They made it from '86 to 91 hidin' behind those little toggles, right?

But I ramble. In spite of-- and maybe even because of it's interesting history, combined with the marvelous condition of this particular guitar, we're looking at a very collectible instrument for the connoisseur of nichey American electric guitars. Maybe even one who doesn't live in Hong Kong. It could happen.

According to the Harmony Central reviews, STAT owners love these guitars, and also dig the support they continue to get from Heritage. So save those GPS co-ordinates kids!

Guitar Adoptions has a large selection of very clean hi-end pre-owned guitars. They're also dealers for G&L, Michael Tuttle, Flaxwood, Giffin, Larivee & Delilah premium guitar lines.

IBC Blues Challenge Youth Showcase - Taylor Marvin

15 year old Taylor Marvin will be representing Colorado in the January 2010 International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase, put on by The Blues Foundation, based in Memphis. In addition to the IBC, The Blues Foundation is the organization behind:

The Blues Music Awards
Blues Hall of Fame
Keeping The Blues Alive
Handy Artists' Relief Trust "HART"
Blues In The Schools

Taylor also joins our esteemed Young Guitar Wonders directory. Besides his love for Strats and playin' the Blues, Taylor is an "A" student and currently working on making Eagle Scout, which also nominates him for some kind of "Least Likely to Die from Poisoned Whiskey & Jealous Husbands AWARD".

If you pay attention to the above video, this lad not only plays with very clean tones & signal-- but his phrasing, feel and syncopation are way mature for a 15 year old white boy. Yes, I know he's using a looper-- don't nobody comment to let me know about it!

Imagine the Orbitz Hovercraft Man time traveling to a 1930's rural Mississippi front porch and reporting to our great Blues ancestors about the 21st Century, the IBC and kids like Taylor Marvin- just for their reaction - then of course having to shoot 'em with that MIB blue light hootie-gooter, thing-a-ma-jig device. This stuff happens a lot, in case you've forgotten.

"Ventura , CA September 17, 2009 - Destined to create more than just another effects pedal, Tone Box, Inc. sets out to break the mold of traditional stomp box shapes and tones adding a new dimension to every musician’s on-stage performance. Co-founded by industry veteran, Kasha and special effects creator, Shawn Crosby, Tone Box officially unveils its first product, the Skull Crusher. Kasha and Crosby saw the need to kick the pedal world into overdrive when they noticed, as Crosby states - “the current market selection was simply boring in their appearance and presentation on stage. We wanted something that adds a visual third dimension to the musicians playing and tone.” Aligning themselves with ‘A’ List rock stars and utilizing the production services of Rockmodules, Skull Crusher has opened the doors on what is only the beginning of a promising line of pedal effects..."

I know I keep saying this, but watch for these in future demo vids. Meanwhile I can tell you that the Tonebug Overdrive has a big and wide, well defined sound-- makes my Boss Bluesdriver sound like a dirt clod...

Edgar Winter's Guitar Player- Doug Rappoport

Yep! Edgar's still at it and still got it too! Just found this clip from a very recent Navarro, CA gig (9/7/09) where Edgar Winter shared the bill with Johnny Winter & Rick Derringer.

Talk about a family reunion!

EWB guitarist Doug Rappoport gets a good workout every gig during the traditional Tobacco Road head cuttin' section that Edgar's had in his show for decades.

Doug's blonde Strat is a new addition. Go Doug!

EWB is currently touring around the US through Nov. 21. Click Here to check if they're coming to your neighborhood. I caught the Portland show in Feb-- a must see and a killer band!

Fred Stuart 3 Piece Matching Fender Set

Masterbuilt Art Stratocaster

THEY'RE BAAAACK!!!
(or maybe they never left...)

While we're on the subject of green & pinstripes, I just discovered this one that we featured back in March. Still for sale from the same seller as last time.

In fact, all three are still on the block. The Strat pictured also has matching Tele & Jazzmaster siblings. The set was an art theme trio built in '98 by Fred Stuart, then at Fender Custom Shop. And also speaking of green, whoever finally picks these up is gonna need some serious green!

The March post has more details along with a link to the seller.
