Guitar Players! Check Out 9V Lithium Polymer Batteries!

ed note: Since this post, Sanyo introduced their lithium ion Pedal Juice product.

Like you, I'm tired of ridiculous 9V alkaline battery prices and tossing the spent ones in the landfill since my local recycling centers can't seem to deal with them. I'm also tired of robbing the smoke alarms when in a pinch. So I decided to research rechargable 9V batts. Here's the scoop:

First of all, those $8 NON-rechargeable Lithiums you see at Wal-Mart, Target & everywhere else now certainly do last longer, unless of course the pedal(s) isn't unplugged or turned off correctly when not in use, in which case that new $8 battery will be just as dead tomorrow. So just screw non-rechargibles period!

Next, 9V NiCad's have been around forever, but they really suck since their actual voltage is around 8.5V-- meaning some effects pedals may not function as well. Their capacity & life per charge cycle is less than half the mAH (milliamp hour) spec of standard Alkaline batteries (approx 600)-- meaning ya gotta swap out & recharge more often than replacing an alkaline. And NiCads are notorious for memory issues, meaning they lose their already wimpy recharge capacity if not cycled thoroughly & meticulously. Who wants to run their devices down all the way just to maintain battery reliability? How stupid. Don't waste my time!

Then there are NiMH rechargeable batteries. Nickel Metal Hydrides are pretty good and also pretty easy to find. The only downside is their mAH capacity is only 180 to 240; about the same as NiCad's. Fortunately NiMH's don't have the memory issues. So NiMH is a good improvement, but now there is something even better.

If not for Lithium Polymer batteries I'd simply recommend NiMH, but LiP's are available in 500-520 mAH capacity and they also don't have memory issues. Recharge time is approx. 1 hour (way faster than NiCad & NiMH).

I just disovered LiP's when searching for Lithium Ion 9V batts which don't seem to exist.

This article about LiP's does provide some comparative data between LiP & LI which weighs in favor of LiP, also good news!

The only LiP 9V's I currently find are produced in Northern America (Canada) by iPower.

iPower 9V LiP's with their four slot rechargers are available from a few online sources you can Google. Here are a couple top search results I found:

www.thomas-distributing.com
www.markertek.com

Ideally, we'd all have pedalboards with AC and just say "Screw batteries altogether!", but that's not always the case and isn't always the most versatile approach. Plus, some pedals are noisier without the filtering aspects of a connected battery present even when the power supply is being used instead.

Think about what you spend on alkaline batteries. And if you also happen to be a smoker, consider how much alkaline battery $$ you burn each week of your tobacco shortened lifespan.

Lithium Polymer batteries are the way to go & will save you $$$ in the long run, as well as spare the environment!

As far as smoking goes, that's really your business, although if you've been pinching the smoke alarms for pedal batteries, that could become somebody else's problem and possibly your ass, especially if you smoke in bed.

I think I've covered everything. ;)))

Not exactly sure how I wound up plugged into this gig, but I see Rock House Blog might have something to do with it. Thanks Sarge!

A Strat for Friday #118 - Fender '57 RI Seafoam (MIJ '95)

Note: 3/29 - Sold for UNDER $700!!! oh well. See CURRENT listing links below.

I know, I know we're dialin' the bling knob way back here, but I've been watchin' this one all week long and it's got a cool vibe. First of all, we're keepin' it real with no artificial ingredients. A Nashville native that's been played nearly every day over the last decade, this sweetheart has true wear & tear right down to her belly button window... see it? Looks like Jeff Beck's been there with a spark plug gapper.

Some kind of mojo goin' on here-- or maybe it's just the futon mattress bedsheet photo spread. I also just noticed my Dunlop Tortex .88 picks are the same color. I need to snap out of it here!

Currently a No Reserve eBay listing, so far it looks like a steal deal, especially considering what we pay for wear like this from the Custom Shop Relic wrecking crew (are they union?*).

Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Pickups Clarified

Samarium Cobalt Pickups
"Hung like Einstein - Smart like a Horse"
If you're like me and not much of a science geek, you may have wondered what these Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups are all about.

Or maybe you haven't...

Anyway, at first I thought "Samarium" was some term Fender made up, like a Star Trek term-- or like those stoopid yogurt commercials using bogus names like "Bifidus Regularis" or "L Casei Immunitas".

"Let's all boldly beam down to the planet Samarium to seek intelligent life!"

Not so Grasshopper! Samarium IS a real "rare earth metal", a term referring to magnetic material (which also sheds some light on where the 70's band "Rare Earth" may have gotten their name-- those cats were deep!).

Next, does Samarium and/or Cobalt make the pickups noiseless? Not quite. Samarium Cobalt is an alternative magnet material to the Alnico grades we often see used for pickups. It has it's own characteristics and thus it's own tone aspects, and is worthy for use in guitar pickup design. But noiselessness requires something else. Samarium Cobalt Noiseless or SCN pickups, as originally designed by Bill Lawrence, and also utilized by Fender, incorporate a stacked coil configuration which accounts for their "Noiseless" aspects.

Any stacked config, when wired & installed correctly will buck 60 cycle hum. Why, one could even call them "humbuckers"-- just a play on words you understand. Many stacked designs exist utilizing Alnico, Ceramic or SC. It's the "stacked" factor kids. So, am I out to trash SCN pickups? Not at all! Some data supports that SC's field properties may make it a better material for maintaining wide freq response in a stacked coil config. But let your own ears be the judge.

So in a nutshell, Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups ARE what they're stacked up to be-- just as long as they're stacked that is...

Pickup gurus Lindy Fralin & Jason Lollar appear to utilize mainly Alnico grades, and they also make stacked designs that folks like.

Even "The Story of the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Pickup" by Dan Smith, published at www.billlawrence.com , makes no mention of stacking. Marketing, folks! So, is there intelligent life on the planet Samarium? Again, let your ears be the judge.

Super Strat Jam: Healey, Edgar, Luke & Doug Rappoport

This clip gives us a great view of the late great Jeff Healey jammin' the Blues with Steve Lukather, Edgar Winter & Edgar's guitarist Doug Rappoport. Jeff is havin' a great time!

Video PART 2

From a few years back, this is at Healey's club in Toronto. According to Doug, Edgar's band was playing a Toronto gig with Alice Cooper at the Molson Amphitheater, when Luke shows up afterwards to take them to Healey's annual jam which Luke was in town for. Luke & Doug are playing on borrowed gear here.

So get that Edgar & Doug had already done their traditional extended Tobacco Road jam at the Molsen show earlier. Edgar's not only still got the pipes, he's got some endurance! There are some funny moments here too.

EWB is playing a series of gigs with Johnny Winter this week. Click here for the schedule. It's a great show!

Flaxwood Guitars USA Dealer - Guitar Adoptions!

Flaxwood Laine USA Guitar Dealer Guitar Adoptions
The Flaxwood Guitars line is now available through Guitar Adoptions. Dave at GA just brought in a nice assortment of models and finishes from the Finland based Flaxwood. For a long time I've been talking about how absolutely guitar crazy Finland is. Pictured above is the Laine model in "Redburst". Sportin' 3 Duncan lipsticks, the Laine- Finnish for "Wave"- is Flaxwood's most Strat-o-genic model, although all models feature various double cutaway designs in semi-hollow, chambered configs with humbuckers, P-90's and top hardware from Schaller & Gotoh. All the finish options must be seen.

Flaxwood doesn't mess around when it comes to recruiting serious demo players either. Check out these videos from Flaxwood's Special Forces Unit:

Timo Kämäräinen (both at Youtube)

Serving the cause for materials sustainability and tone superiority, Flaxwood is taking care of musicians and the environment together. How cool is that?!

Kevin Eubanks' Serious Picking Technique

Every now & then I like to feature interesting picking approaches. Here's a cool video of Kevin Eubanks using no picks and makin' stuff happen! Most of you know Kevin as the music director for NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno. So it's no secret he's a badass guitar player who carries his acoustic fingerstyle technique over to electric with no problem, resulting in plenty of control, dynamics and articulation.

Picks? Who needs 'em anyway!

BTW, looks like Eubanks moves with Leno while Conan O'Brien brings Max Weinberg with him to The Tonight Show. Just as it should be!

Ed Note update: As many already know, Kevin Eubanks ultimately retired from The Tonight Show in order to put more energy in his music career.

Fender 40th Anniversary Aluminum Strat, Purple Marble

Here's another wild one from Fender's 1994 run of aluminum hollow body Strats. The anodized finish is "Purple Marble" and it sports all the 40th Anniversary stuff, i.e. the raised headstock emblem and the "40 Years & Still Rockin'!" neck plate. Vintage Guitars & Guitar Books at Old Railroad Antiques

Anyone remember when they were this big? Probably back when gas was 20 cents a gallon. I seem to recall hearing stories about Mom & Dad saving up their Raliegh & Belair cigarette coupons to get a set of humbuckers for the patio. Then when they decided to put in the deck, Pops just hauled all that old patio stuff off to the dump. Nobody ever thought anything about it.

Anyhow, I found this book at an eBay Store called oldrailroadantiques although you can get it cheaper at this Amazon link, where the reviews are too.

Still, ya wanna check out oldrailroadantiques for their guitar inventory. In spite of their name, this place specializes in serious vintage collectible guitars!

RedPlate Amps, The Size of the Fight in the Dog.

Remember that old saying, "It ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." ?

Above we have Jacob Petersen, our newest Strat-o-Brother addition, who only 10 years in the USA-- originally from Denmark, is establishing himself very well as a straight ahead Bluesman, having toured and recorded 5 years with Curtis Salgado. In these two videos Jacob gives us an ivy league tone lesson on a 40W RedPlate TweedyVerb, with the master volume NEVER BEYOND "ONE"!

For starters, he's in his apartment and can't turn it up any louder there, but in another sense the tones are just unreal and speak in high volume for both the player and the gear!

Another interesting aspect here is that Jacob's Strats are equipped with Curtis Novak pickups, and Novak is of the old school "scatterwound" and UNDER wound philosophy. Under wound pickups apparently have wider tonal definition, and scatterwinding describes a method of hand winding pickups in random patterns that can't be done with automatic winding machines.

5/24 Ed note: Jacob recently switched to Fred Stuart pickups. Click Here for a new demo vid along with details and links to Stuart.

This is a complicated post for me as I'm simultaneously trying to promote Jacob Peterson, RedPlate Amps & Curtis Novak Pickups. But it just doesn't make sense splitting this into 3 separate posts though, since Petersen pulls all the elements together so well in his RedPlate demo vids.
Our underdog theme also works for everyone here.

So please watch and listen carefully to both vids above. The clean notes are nice and round, the overdrive notes in top vid from 4:35 just sing, and in the bottom video the double stops from 6:28 to 6:35 are all growl and NO mud. But watch all the vids from start to finish please!

RedPlate Amps are very popular right now on the Blues circuit; used by Ronnie Baker Brooks, Tommy Castro, Elvin Bishop, Smokin' Joe Kubek-- to name a few and some harp players too. They are priced at the low end of the boutique scale and easily recognized by their bright red tolex exterior.

This week I saw a Dumble combo eBay listing with a $25K reserve. If the Boutique Mystique Blues has you down & out, check out RedPlate for tons of audio & video demo clips and pricing that may be affordable for you. But the tone alone is top dollar!

Check out all the links in this post and discover plenty of good info. like I did!

These Boots Were Made for Wah Wah!

Ed note: This is a Best of Stratoblogster orig. posted in 2007!

I found this video at the MusicThing blog. Here's a great alternative treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome- RLS, that shouldn't- I say shouldn't- cause sexual side effects or "gambling urges". MORE & MORE Dunlop Crybaby Pedals

EVH Wah price
Some of Dunlop's more recent additions to the Crybaby Wah-o-sphere include the EVH, the CAE (Custom Audio Electronics - Bob Bradshaw design) and the Buddy Guy- complete with polka dots.

These join the Classic, Standard, 535Q, Hendrix, Zakk Wylde, Dimebag, Slash, Kerry King and a few other Crybaby variations.

There must be a group of esoteric wah pedal connoissieurs out there who have every single model and can hardly wait for the next one to debut. Maybe some even keep all their Crybaby's in one BIG pedal board, and stay up late into the night testing, comparing and documenting the differences. A kayak sized pedalboard that clamps to the roof rack for easy transport to Wah Wah Fellowship meetings, competition rallies, seminars, workshops and symposiums across the land.

I just know they're out there. Nobody tells ya this is so, better than Dunlop.

This also inspires me to think about new models I'd promote if I worked for the Jim Dunlop team. Here are some examples:

Swiss Army Crybaby - Actually not a bad idea, the housing would accomodate one of those handy little all-in-one emergency guitar tech tools. The tool would snap into or onto the side somehow. Pretty nifty.

Crybaby LW Bubbles - Why stop at models named after guitarists. The Lawrence Welk model would pump out streams of bubbles when rocked. Lawrence may no longer be hip, but bubbles are universal, timeless, and everybody loves 'em! So let's bring bubbles back and put some attention on where they're coming from. Soon everyone will want a "Bubbler pedal", whether they play guitar or not! Also bear in mind that Welk's horn players were fond of muting-- a practice which inspired the invention of the wah pedal- so props are due. Wunnerful idea for young and old alike!

Crybaby YOKO - This pedal is full of surprises! A special internal relay randomly reverses this model's input/output-- adding unexpected spontaneous, dissonant, shrieking fun to every gig. Pedal includes special bag in which pedal can remain while in use.

Crybaby AS - "Adam Sandler". There just oughta be a Sandler model for general purposes. It would be a very rugged & durable pedal, with big rivets and such. Tempered.

Crybaby JB - "Jack Black"-- Same as above.

Crybaby NUGE - Yes, it's also a firearm.

Crybaby AT Wisp - Similar to the LW Bubbles, this "Aroma Therapy" model would incorporate Glade's Wisp dispensing unit, allowing the pedal to produce instant fragrance enhancement from the entire Glade line, with the addition of Honey BBQ Ranch, Cookies n Cream and Espresso scents. Aroma Therapy is very popular, and where better than at your gig?! Show 'em your tone don't stink!

Crybaby MJ - And of course, why not a pedal for the King of Pop himself. Ya know, Michael is making a big comeback this very moment, so no better time than the present to introduce this model! With that said, I've put so much time and so many design revisions into this model, i.e. dynamic sweep ranges, housing contours, color scheme, etc., that at some stages it almost ceases to be a wah pedal. But I still have high hopes this pedal at some point will evolve & solidify into a unit that I and all users of all ages, the world over, can love, cuddle & stay happy with in a happy place.

Crybaby JD - "Johnny Depp". A backup contingency model in case the MJ never gets out of R&D.

I have other models in the pipeline still being tested. If anyone at Dunlop reads this, just remember that you saw it here first!

Thomas Leeb's Skill Acquistion Syndrome

Does anyone else see a paradox here? Tone Merchants, a major purveyor of $ copious $ boutique $ gear $-- catering to Gear Acquisition Syndrome sufferers of the highest $$ levels, by hosting a deadly lethal solo acoustic player with no pedals or nuthin', except maybe for some kind of Magic Michael Hedges Enhancement Hand Cream that Esteban sells in a 3:00 AM infomercial to the medical marijuana constituency.

Is this some cruel sales strategy twist? When Thomas Leeb is done playing, some folks must have to immediately purchase things like loopers and delay gear in order to keep from committing suicide. A few probably also stop at the donut shop on their way home to hide & search for Esteban's 800#.

Ever eat a maple bar with bacon on top?

Seriously though, ain't Leeb one badass monster player! If you're into cool attack, tunings & voicings, still lost since Hedges died-- and Preston Reed ain't doin' it for ya, Thomas Leeb may just be what the doctor ordered, unless you're bi-polar and have severe G.A.S.

Paul Simon's Stripped Down Strat

(photo cred: ryokan @ www.tdpri.com)

Last nite, I just happened to catch Paul Simon's 2007 Library of Congress, Gershwin Award show on my local PBS channel (yep, it's pledge drive time again...). Simon was keepin' it simple with this one trick pony Strat-- not the principal source of his revenue.

Anyway, on one tune he picked up the same Strat pictured above, which has nothing but a jack plate and a mini bucker in the middle position. I don't even think that body has a finish or pots. So, Paul Simon also deserves recognition from the Strat community (that's us), for "Most Stripped Down Strat". That's right, this even beats EVH's minimalism. Fender could really maximize their hardware margin with a Paul Simon Artist Signature Model. Let's get on that one boys!

The only buzz I can find about the guitar is within this TDPRI thread, although it could come right out of some Nat'l Geographic feature. Those West African cats are jammin' on some of the most basic gear you'll ever see. You know a brother in W Africa will make a guitar out of Pepsi container and sound better than your ass on a good day. Simon probably got the idea from workin' with those folks on that road from Timbuktu to Graceland.

And there really ain't much more to it. What you see is what you get.

Gibson Lifestyle's Robin Trower Feature

That's right, you read right.

The Gibson.com Lifestyle section just featured a cool article about Robin Trower. Kind of a retrospective with emphasis on how he's gotten his sounds, and his gear.

I'm a bit baffled to see a major Strat-o-Bro like Trower profiled by the Gibson folks. In fact, the piece includes two photos with RT playing Strats, and doesn't plug anything about Gibson. Hard to believe they don't have enough players in their own endorsing artist stable to write about

Not a complaint though, just puzzling. I mean, how likely is it that we'll be seeing Zakk Wylde and his LP profiled at Fender News?

So kudos to Gibson and writer Ted Drozdowski for putting the music first!

Flaxwood Guitars Made With SPRUCE FIBER!

Flaxwood Laine Guitar
For anyone else who's blown a bunch of time at Flaxwood.com trying to figure out just what the hell they're made out of, I finally found out in their PG interview video.

And it really isn't flax.

Spruce fiber combined with a polymer and injection molded. But why do I have the feeling we're not supposed to know about the spruce fiber part? Doesn't bother me, spruce isn't an endangered species.

Pictured above is the "Laine" (Finnish for "wave"); Flaxwood's most Stratogenic model. It incorporates Duncan lipsticks, Schaller LP bridge and Gotoh locking tuners. Flaxwoods are produced in Finland-- the world's most guitar crazy nation. The Laine could be considered an exotic super-Strat, as the demo links below seem to bear out. Lipsticks too!!!

I recommend visiting the Flaxwood site for some very interesting copy written with tremendous emphasis upon the PR aspects of sustainability & environmental impact issues. Whether or not you agree with their technical explanations of wood grains vs tone, and how their process & materials are ideal both for instruments and the environment, you've got to be impressed at how well these concepts are married and so eloquently expressed throughout the website. They make some good valid points too. Great copy for tree huggers & tone freaks alike!

Either way, Flaxwood appears to be making some good guitars. There are lots of great demo vids online utilizing GOOD musicians with chops, and the look of these guitars isn't too over the top. The owner buzz is also very positive. Compared to companies like RKS (now defunct?) and Etavonni, Flaxwood may be here to stay and compete with outfits like Parker.

LA Lakers 60th Anniversary Stratocaster

I like the LA Lakers, and usually root for them, except when they're playing the Blazers-- ESPECIALLY when Trevor Ariza is tryin' to kill Rudy Fernandez.

Anyway, this Custom Shop Strat, with graphics by Pamelina H., commemorating the Lakers' 60th anniversary, was auctioned off on March 2, 09 for a charity benefit. The Strat is autographed by this season's Lakers startering lineup- including Ariza's flagrant & foul signature. Oh well...

Forte Music Notation Software's New English Freeware Version

The folks at Forte recently released a freeware downloadable version of their latest music notation software in English. Forte is based in Germany, and somebody there who reads Stratoblogster wanted me to pass this along.

If you've been considering notation software, this is a cool way to try out a program without buying something you might not like.

This stuff is supposed be real simple too, so that kids and even guitar players can figure it out (they don't say that).

Are you an even guitar player or an odd one?

Stratoblogster Adds New Twist to Friday Strat Feature!

Inspired by two of my favorite non-guitar personalities, I've decided this week to combine food & beverage pairings with our regular Friday Strat feature.

Here's why:

1) Because I can.
2) It's my blog.
3) I don't care if it makes no sense to you, it does to me.

Those are my top 3 most analytical reasons-- there are more.

From now on, starting with Friday Strat #116, you can look forward to my personal food & drink recommendations with every featured Strat. Just one more way of providing some hospitality and added value for all our fine Stratoblogster readers!

So, "Bon Appetit!" or "F#*k Off!" Whichever you prefer!

A Strat for Friday #116 - MIM Classic Players 60's Strat

If you're on a budget and/or not ready for that overly extensive DIY build or upgrade, here's an idea from one of our readers. *Ed Note: Also see new item below we're adding to our regular Friday Strat feature.

Michael sent me the scoop on this great eBay deal he got. All he's done so far is replace the pickguard with the tortoise shell one you see here making it both striking and unique when combined with that sonic blue finish. Keepin' it simple with some nice touches!

More details from Michael:

"...This strat was an ebay purchase. It came stock with some sweet sounding custom shop 69 pickups. It is the MIM Classic Player 60's model (custom shop 'designed') with the 12" radius fretboard on a maple c shaped neck.

The neck has no skunk stripe and the 60's style truss rod adjustment at the heel. The trem is the vintage two point variety. It works better than any Strat trem I've used before. The only thing custom about it is the pickguard I added. All in all, a really great Strat that competes with American Standards at a budget price..."

Modified Thumbpick Idea #472...

From our "Hazards of Sleeping With the TV On Dept."

I've been pondering modified, super-low profile thumbpick design ideas lately-- and had a sudden idea which utilizes the Mirena IUD, but am also concerned about certain risks and side effects.

How do I know if this is right for me?

Michael Landau, I'm Buzzed - LIVE Version

Yeah, and I'm buzzed to be back online after some stupid hardware failures here at the Stratoblogster compound.

Here's one of my favorite tunes; a live version of "I'm Buzzed", originally from Michael Landau's "Tales From the Bulge" album.

There are various cool things about this particular video. First of all, the viewer's perspective is ideal for seeing any great guitar player perform live. This is where you wanna be. Besides the cool chord voicings off the main riff, I'm really diggin' Landau's right hand hybrid control. Notice that the pick comes and goes. He tucks it between his first and middle finger when not using the pick-- right where your dad put your nose and showed it to you when he used to steal it. Throughout the clip, you can easily observe every tone adjustment. And Michael Landau is all about TONE!

The whammy in the hand is very natural and in control. Landau is playing his signature John Suhr model Strat.

Click here for another live version with better sound & different tones-- but not as clear video.

I'M BUZZED!

Chromed Aluminum Body Stratocaster

Here's a super clean custom project build incorporating a Fender hollow aluminum, chromed body. Produced in the early 90's, these were the bodies Fender originally used for the Ford Mustang and Harley Davidson Custom Shop tribute Strats. Leftover bodies were also used for a production model run in '94. We run into those once & awhile.

The owner/builder is listing this finished project Strat at eBay. CLICK HERE for extensive details, background and several photos. Guitar is configured with hi-end hdwr & tricked out electronics, and a special Fender Anniversary series neck.

Joe Perry Selling Gibson Goldtone Combo Amp on eBay

aerosmith selling guitar gear auction sale

CLICK HERE for the listing- Gibson/Trace Elliot GA30-RVS Goldtone Combo Amplifier.

Time left: Mar 09, 200901:00:57 PM PDT

Current bid: US $3,300.00

eBay seller officialjoeperry , claiming to be Joe Perry's guitar tech is listing this amp. The seller lists no other gear at this time and has no feedback score. However, the seller indicates (below) that much more gear will be listed in the future. The listing has lots of pics, and the seller is based in Hanover, MA. Ser# tag photo is include. At this moment there are 20 bids.

Seller's description:

"Genuine touring and studio combo amp from Joe Perry's personal collection. Used in the studio for the making of the Just Push Play record and one of the amps used on the Just Push Play tour 2001. There were several of these amps used, making a wall of them in Joe's live rig. More combos and extension cabinets will be up for auction soon. Joe is happy to sign the item if you want. Regardless, a letter of authenticity will be included in the sale, as well as a photo of Joe signing the amp if you choose to have it signed. The amp is a Gibson Goldtone GA30-RVS. It is an EL84 tubed, Class A British-made combo with great reverb. Trace Elliott was the manufacturer for Gibson. The amp was made in the late 1990's. It's in very good condition, a couple of small nicks in the tolex from the tour, but thats it.
I have been Joe Perry's personal guitar tech for the last 17 years. All tours, all records. I personally cared for this amp. It sounds cool! Check out the tone on the Aerosmith" Rockin the joint" live c.d."
